Show up your Racedesk to get a decent vFoV
« on: Wednesday, 07. October 2015, 19:59:35 »
If you are a serious racer - and all of us are, right? ;) - you already have been thought about the correct vertical field of view (vFoV) in your favourite game. It is not enough to set it up ingame just to see your side rear mirrow. The lines from the lower end of your Monitor panel to your eye and back to the upper end of your Monitor panel are describing an angle.  This is your physical vFoV when you´re watching at your monitor (or triple monitor setup).
The ingame vFoV have to be set now exactly the same to match this physical vFoV. Everyone knows the effect of a pole when its half in water and half in the air. For you watching at this pole you see a kink at the transition from the air to the water. This is caused by the different light refraction of water and air.
And if you do NOT set up the same vFoV Ingame and in real you will be trapped with the same effect. This means for you that your brain have to calculate everytime you try to hit the apex. You have no chance of a naturally sense when cornering.

A goot point to start is here:
http://www.projectimmersion.com/fov/perspective.php , there is also a calculator for Assetto Corsa here.

It is very difficult to trust this calculation, because in most cases you will get a calculated vFoV of ~ 20° or lower... But it´s the correct value. To set this is an awful pain because you see way too less...

There are two solutions at the moment (My big hope is the Oculus Rift, here you have a correct angle of 110°  :happy2:):
1. Buy the biggest Monitor you can achieve and / or
2. Place it as near you can get it to your eyes.

Here´s my solution, i made a drawer at my desk to get the monitor 49cm in front of my eyes. It´s a 24" Monitor, this way i achieve 34° vFov:

Looks good! But i don´t like the clamps of such systems. Is it stable?

Sebastian, which vFov you´re using ingame? You´re fast, imagine how fast you are with a correct vFov!  :D
